Part 1 is the exam of the class (no slide on it, exam not open source of course!)
Part 2 is students presenting their group project 2 (no slide on it)
Biodiversity is vital to preserve the habitability of spaceship earth. We then need to preserve and restore it not to suffer as humans (ethical reasons can/should be added to find our just place within the living world)
Practical solutions exist to preserve and restore biodiversity (fighting environmental amnesia, better trust in science, better techniques such as regenerative hydrology or agroecology, focus on nature-based solutions see also here / biomimicry / geomimicry instead of geoengineering, paying attention to Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPLCs), integration of planetary boundaries into decision making, new accounting tools sur as C.A.R.E., better democratic governance, regulation, granting rights to nature and biodiversity, slowing down, empathy, creativity, outcomes from COP etc.)
…But they will not be enough if we forget central aspects such as limits to (material and energy consumption) growth, domination of some humans over other humans, sufficiency (avoiding demand for material, energy, land and water consumption), fair transition, systemic vision…
The concepts of green growth (absolute decoupling) and sustainable development (weak sustainability instead of strong sustainability) must be overcome.
To make people embrace these changes and develop new value systems, new narratives and stories need to be invented. In addition to that, a new democratic citizen construction involving people at each step of the conception of new products and services could help.
Two non negligible assets: strong natural empathy humans have for biodiversity and the strength of biodiversity (ability to reproduce, disperse, interact and evolve)
Companies and humans need then to find their place in this new world. Let’s open up these new spaces together :)
